Top Ten Tips for Saving Water

  1. When using a bath, fill up with just enough water to wash with – children can share bath water
  2. Re-cycle bath water to water grassed areas or to flush toilets.
  3. Wait until you have a full load of washing before using your washing machine.
  4. Repair leaks as soon as possible.
  5. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth, shave or wash dishes.
  6. Use less electricity. Power plants use thousands of kilolitres of water to cool. Do your part to conserve power, and you’re indirectly saving water, too!
  7. Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. You can get one of these from your water provider.
  8. Reducing your shower from 10 minutes to five minutes could save on average 23 litres of water a day.
  9. Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe, in the early morning and late afternoon to reduce evaporation.
  10. Use buckets for cleaning floors, windows and cars.
